Nothin’ Special

Dear Diary,

Sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m nothing special.

It’s good to keep this in mind during those times I begin to think that I’m really accomplished at an activity, or that I have something important and distinct to offer the world. Once one gets to thinking that way, the next step is to convince themselves they’re better. And that’s a huge mistake.

Humans are amazing because we have an incredible capacity for self-delusion. We’re so convinced of our own brilliant uniqueness. I think we need that to survive. Otherwise, what’s the point of self-improvement? What motivation does a herd animal have to strive for perfection?

This realization is always as welcome as a punch in the gut, but I think it’s healthy. It keeps me in line.
