fall = curry 2

Yep, it’s fall.

I was caught off-guard by it, since it went from the 70s to frost-warning within a week’s time. Then it rained for an entire week while it stayed cold, so my garden has just been sitting around looking sad. Last night was the first time I was able to do anything with it.

I pulled out the tomatoes, peppers, beans, sunflowers, and eggplant. I’m slowly working on the tomatillo, trying to salvage what’s still usable on it (I hate pulling up the plant when there are still hundreds of little tomatillos on there). I have about 5 pounds of green tomatoes ripening in newspaper in the basement. Tonight I’ll finish the tomatillos, bring the herbs in to dry, and chop up the remaining lemongrass for another infusion. I still want to figure out how to get the seeds off the amaranth, too, but it seems it may involve winnowing. You know what nobody living in this century does? Winnowing.

Matt and I finally made it to the indian market to stock up on curry supplies last night. I came home and made Curried Brown Rice with Tomatoes and Peas, mainly because I also have a bowl of ripe tomatoes from the garden sitting around. It was excellent, and makes a ton so you have leftovers. That will probably accompany our chana masala tonight (the first recipe I’m making from 660 Curries… only 659 more to go!), too.

Our neighborhood chili cook-off is Saturday. I have to find a competition-worthy dessert!! The pressure! I need to look at my recipes.

This week has been gloriously relaxing: there’s just been bowling and gym a lot of sports-watching accompanied by knitting. I plan to have more of the same tonight (minus the bowling) before the weekend craziness begins.

    At least your garden just looked sad for a week; mine has been depressed all summer.
