Witness.

Hello again.

I went for a walk again this evening. It was cold and misty, and there were very few people out, because the smart ones know to stay indoors in the rain. On my way around the lake:

I saw a couple arguing, trying to be subtle about being absolutely furious with each other in public.

I saw another couple being in love, completely absorbed in themselves.

I saw a guy shuffling with his arms wrapped tightly around himself, looking like he was ready to end it.

I saw the same guy on the other side of the lake. He still had his arms wrapped around himself, but this time he smiled at me.

I saw one of those souped-up Japanese cars with the neon underneath slam on the brakes and sit there for a good minute while a confused duck decided whether to cross the street or not.

Walking down the hill by the beach, I looked over and saw ducks. At least fifty of them. They were all sitting at the edge of the water on the sand, and they were all very precisely spaced out, about a foot apart, all looking the same direction out over the lake. There were clouds of seagulls circling overhead.

It seemed important in a way. I knew it was one of those things that nature understood and I didn’t. But sometimes, what’s most important is just to witness.
