just stuff

Gooood evening.

A couple things, and then I’m back to my work.

Yesterday I was freaking out because I got my first W2 payment and it was lessened by taxes to a much, much greater extent than I expected. In fact, it was only 55% of the amount I invoiced. This made me more than a little depressed about the Internal Revenue Service’s intentions towards me and my financial future; whereas I envisioned myself well-supplied and comfortable, they saw me living in a cardboard box in Gary, Indiana.

Today I got the pay statement in the mail, and realized the misunderstanding: they had paid me for February, not but one day later, when generally I am used to the net-30 cycle of contract invoicing, meaning that I should be getting paid for February sometime before April 15, if I’m lucky. So the gist of this is that my February invoice was much lower than January, because there weren’t as many days to work and I went on vacation, and that the amount of taxes they took out what exactly was I was wishing them to, in the vicinity of 35%.

More importantly, they still owe me a huge amount of money for January. My biggest invoice ever. Now, since I know to not really count on things until they happen, I cannot yet celebrate. I’m just daydreaming about the fact that they must give me this money, and it will be enough to cover the ridiculous sum I owe on my 2004 taxes, without having to set another cent aside. I can get back to my usual plan of investing and buying things I really like. In order of priority, of course.

This falls fully in the realm of too-good-to-be-true, though, so I’m not booking round-the-world cruises or anything. Yet.

Today I scheduled an evening at home. I had to put it on my calendar to remind myself, or else I’d make plans and be cranky afterwards. I had a sink full of dishes and was down to the hated clothes. For the first time since I’ve lived here, I did laundry in the building. This will also be the last time I do laundry in the building, because my clothes came out of the dryer smelling like paint thinner. Also, they were really soft as if I had thrown in 10 dryer sheets, only I didn’t. Disturbing.

And now to lull you to sleep, I have some knitting pictures!!!

This is the hoodie I’m working on from Knitty. It has some crazy intense cabling and it’s coming out so well I can’t believe it. Here’s one arm and the back, with 5 inches of ribbing with cables interspersed. I love it. They look weird because they’re on stitch holders, waiting to be pieced together around the yoke.

Also, I know several of you are knitters, so if you know how to make knitting look all nice and professional in photos, please to let me know. Because this stuff is way nicer than it looks in pictures.

That’s all for today! Bye now.
