things are happening around here.

…and the least exciting thing is the fact that I just installed MVC3. You win bonus points if you know off the top of your head what that is (hint: I write about it on InfoQ a lot).

My honeymoon photos are finally done! Of the 1100 I took, I ended up with almost 700 on Flickr. Next up is the travel journal… that’s going to take a while.

My birthday weekend was excellent. We had happy hour with Bill, Wendy, and Amelia, then went to the Twins game. They won, but we didn’t get to witness the victory because we had 10:30 reservations at Bar La Grassa. We had drinks afterward at Clubhouse Jager, and stayed til the hipster quotient became too painfully hilarious to handle. We ended up having champagne in our room at the Marquette somewhere around 2am.

Saturday, we met Kris, Orsi, and their awesome kids at Canterbury. I lost only .70, and Matt won a bunch of cash. We stayed to watch the Belmont Stakes, then went to St Paul to meet up with them again at Deutsche Tage on Summit Avenue. We hung out there drinking beer for a while, then went over to campus for dinner and to watch hockey and basketball at the same time. Sunday, we hung out at my parents’ house, where I got a bunch of kayak-related supplies for my birthday.

We took our kayaks over to Cedar Lake on Wednesday, and got some experience paddling in the wind. I was surprised to learn that the big issue isn’t the waves (though the splashing results in really wet pants), but the fact that the wind tries to rip the paddle out of your hands. I decided to order a paddle leash just in case. We need to go back there again soon to cross over to Isles and Calhoun; it was too choppy on those lakes to get to them this week.

Last night, we had dinner at Jasmine 26 and then wandered over to Eat Street Social to see if we could get anywhere near the bar. We found two spots, and Nick was even working. He introduced us to the other bartenders (Jessie from Town Talk is there now, too), and got right back to old times by handing us shots of bourbon. I really miss Town Talk sometimes.

Tonight we’re going to try Maruso for dinner, since I can see it from my desk. We have our work season tickets for the Twins game, so I have to attempt to not get beaned with a foul ball from ol’ steroidy Ryan Braun.

In travel news, we booked a flight to Chicago at the end of August, because it was hella cheap. (If you see airfares under $100, you jump on them.) We’re going to stay at the Palmer House, because it’s the in-laws’ favorite, and it’s really convenient. We’re also going to attempt to use one of those interpersonal car-renting programs so that we can drive out to take pictures of the four places I’ve lived there. It’s on my 101 Things list, after all!

We’re also planning on accompanying the in-laws to Las Vegas, probably sometime in September, and are hoping we can swing a trip to San Francisco with our Seattle pals in October. That should keep the wanderlust in check til our Big Jamaican Vacation in February.

In related news, Tripit says we’ve traveled over 14,000 miles to 8 countries this year. Nice.
