the smell of tooth dust in the morning

One of my teeth has been bothering me to the point of making my ear ache, so it was time to go visit the dentist. I figured it was a cavity, but it turns out it was actually a cracked filling. So instead of a simple procedure, I got a crown instead. SURPRISE!

It’s one of the two crowns my dentist was anticipating anyway, so I guess I’m glad to have it done with. I do have to go in for the permanent crown in two weeks, but that part doesn’t involve a drill. And hopefully it’s done hurting, or I’ll need a root canal. No thank you! (I’m also really glad our dental insurance was recently upgraded: instead of costing me $1,100, it was $400.)

Last night, I went to get my hair cut, and I have bangs now. Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve had bangs?? So weird. Anyway, I’m really happy with it, and it looks better when I pin my hair up, which is highly convenient for the 3-Day. Since I was a little early for my appointment, I started on another item from my 101 things list, and drove around taking photos of three of my previous homes. (This one makes me want to have a contest to see who had the worst college apartment, because I think I might win with the rat, roaches, and not one but two fires.)

I’d watched the Neelys on the Food Network at the gym the other day and then told Matt about it, so he was inspired to make this for dinner:

soul food cookin'

(Sorry about the crappy photo; our kitchen is lit slightly better than a cave.) We had oven-‘fried’ chicken with panko breading, the same in seitan form for me, homemade mac and cheese that will last us a year as leftovers, and collard greens from the garden. Yum.

I’ve now put 7 hours into cooking down a giant batch of tomatoes for tomato paste. If it’s not done by this weekend, I’m declaring it really thick tomato soup instead. Regardless, I can’t believe how good something that simple tastes: it’s just mashed-up fresh tomatoes, a little brown sugar, and salt.

I’ll post the recipe when it’s finished!
