Howdy.

I went to hear Mr. Mike Doughty tonight. I was planning on seeing him at Bonnaroo, but ended up spending his performance in my vehicle on the side of the interstate.

So I bought my ticket around 7, and was told he wasn’t playing until 8:30. I decided to stay outside for a while, since I don’t see the part of downtown that’s not in the general vicinity of Luce very often anymore. It’s too bidness for me. Anyway, it was weird! I think I’m still stuck in travel mode, because I was wandering around like a tourist. In my own city! Completely surreal. And awesome.

I walked into First Ave and there was a goofy bluegrass band on stage. They were playing full-on hillbilly instruments, and rocking out. Seriously, if I was going to start a band, it would be bluegrass. Because I have this fantasy involving the banjo, y’see. So I hung out at a table with a sad-looking boy, and then made my move towards the front in between sets. The awesome thing about going to shows by your lonesome is it’s really easy to get up close. I ended up about 10 feet away from Doughty. Sigh.

The show was great. Whenever the drummer or pianist weren’t playing a song, they’d pull out a book and start reading. Halfway through the show, they presented Mike with cake and made us all sing Happy Birthday. He talked about riding on a Mr. T float in the crazy Bonnaroo parade. He did two encores. After the show, I went and got a CD and his book of poetry autographed. We talked about Bonnaroo. Also, I saw Minneapolis legend Dan Wilson.

First Ave also has this deal now where you give them $25 for a 6-month membership, and get free tickets for everything there until the end of July. That’s insane. I’m signing up, because the Shins are there next week. Not to mention pro wrestling in July. The Sexiest Man Alive and I are so there; he just doesn’t know it yet.

I know I swore I wasn’t going to another huge-ass music festival anytime soon, but Willie Nelson is supposed to be playing at this Green Somethingorother festival in Duluth. Fucking Duluth. I might have to go anyway.

And tonight’s very special non-sequitur: I have another photo up at the mirror project.

The end.
Jenni
