Mornin’.
I’m sitting here trying to come up with a good reason for staying at work, beyond the usual ‘one day equals one car payment’ routine, which somehow isn’t sufficient enough to convince me right now. I’ll probably stay just because it’s quiet and there’s no real obligation towards massive productivity. I will write some code; it’s what I do. I was the first one in today, which is pretty funny considering I’m the least-obligated person here. The others are either real employees or fulltime contractors. One thing I will never regret is negotiating that very flexible contract. Every time it comes up for renewal, they ask me to consider becoming an employee. It’s very nice, but I always say no. I’m aware that means that at some point I’ll become too expensive for them, and I’m ready for that. I’ll miss them, because they’ve been great to me. Micci came in at 9:15, unpacked her laptop, and realized she had left the power cord at home, 30 miles away. She decided to work until the battery ran out, which gives her maybe an hour and a half. Once I started my hacking-and-gasping routine, she decided that maybe she’d run the CD player so that the battery would drain faster. Last time I had a cold, she caught it and ended up cracking a rib coughing. Today I’m thinking about vacation. It’s the time of year for climbing aboard the lil’ rig and driving the hell out of town. My next big road trip plan was New England, to cover the remaining six states in the lower 48 I’ve yet to set foot in. But I’m not all that excited about it; I’m sure I’ll have fun there, but there are other places I’d rather go. Like the southwest, California, Seattle, or Texas. All good places to go alone. Hopefully soon, Jason and I will be camping in Utah. I’m looking forward to it since I know pretty much nothing about wilderness camping. I will arrive with the essentials (as I see them): sleeping bag, Camelbak, digital camera, hiking boots, and Tofurky Jurky. I’m no kinda outdoorsman, but I’m enthusiastic as hell. The fact that he knows all this stuff already allows me to not worry too much about it. nts: check into whether you can outrun a bear or not. nts: do they have bears in utah? nts: you can definitely outrun mormon missionaries. OK, Micci left and Pam is out and Michael is writing procs and talking to himself, as usual. My code has worked magically on the very first try, and I’m going to consider today a success and get the hell out of here. Slacker! I’m going to the gym. It’ll either help clear my lungs or kill me; I’ll let you know how it goes. Jenni
