We’re Brewmasters Now. 2

Last night, we bottled our beer! It ended up being only a slightly messy process, which made me glad we didn’t attempt to do the bottling in the basement, re: carpet.

The last step involves letting it condition in the bottle for at least a week. We sampled a bit of what we had left over, and it tastes exactly like a flat English brown ale, so I think it’s going to be good.

This weekend we’re going to head back to Northern Brewer and pick up supplies for a new batch! While that’s fermenting, I expect everyone to come over and drink at least two from the cases in our basement. Deal?

I’d love to come and sample your ‘would be’ flat English brown ale – make it a bit hoppier and it might become a good English bitter. Brown ale is very passe over here and is, in fact, hard to come by (except for Newcastle Brown, which I think cheats and isn’t a brown such as I drank when much younger).

If I ever get to Minneapolis (all I know about Minneapolis came from ‘Little Green Apples’) perhaps I could get to sample your brew – the best thing about beer, particularly English beer, is that unless it is very bad it can be good, unlike continental lagers which lack personality and taste (too cold).

If you ever get to London it would be a pleasure to introduce you (if you haven’t already done so) to some superb British brews and hostelries.

I’ve only just discovered your site but I will be back – it’s fun!

(ps: Why ‘chocolate mussonlini’ ? Il Duce would most likely to have been into ice cream.)

      Welcome! :)

I’m really pleased with our first beer! It has a lot of flavor and is best cool but not cold, like English beer. Our second batch I’m not sure about yet… It’s a honey ale that needs more time in the bottles before it’s finished, I think. We’re making a Belgian now that I’m REALLY excited about.

I have bad news about Minneapolis: it snows a lot here when winter comes. Haha. If you’re going to visit, time it for our very short summers instead. It’s gorgeous here right now!

My husband and I were in London not too long ago; we went to Europe for our honeymoon last May. We only had three days in London, but we tried to make the most of it! We arrived on the Eurostar from Brussels (which was fantastic), and stayed very near Angel tube station. We found a few good pubs we really enjoyed, and a couple excellent cocktail bars as well. I feel like we didn’t cover as much ground there as we managed do in the rest of Europe, because it took a very long time to get anywhere. It didn’t help that we only had paper maps, though. (I subscribed to the BT three-day wifi pass and it was almost completely useless.) I for sure want to go back, because it’s a really fun city. And I’d like it to be warmer next time, too.

“Chocolate Mussolini” is such an old joke I don’t even remember. I’m sure it was pretty funny at the time, though. Thanks for stopping by!
