Helloooo, muchachos. Are you working today? I am.
Last Friday, Kaye and I went to the Science Museum. I hear tell that it’s her favorite place on earth. In keeping with my extremely high maturity level, I like anything there that moves or makes noise or resembles a video game (i.e. the BARGE-DRIVING SIMULATION). Also, crinoids and the questionable medical devices are cool. My favorite part was something that’s probably been there since the beginning of time, but I’d never watched: a 9-minute video showing the length of the Mississippi River from where it begins at Itasca State Park, all the way to the Gulf. Holy crap, that was awesome. I kept exclaiming, Hey, I’ve been there!! I’ve been there too! I had to shudder a little at Natchez, Mississippi. We saw the Omnitheatre movie about Baja California. It made me excited for the Bahamas, and also amused to learn that Kaye thinks it’s gross that there are fish in the ocean. I mostly sat there pondering the fact that it’s full of things like whale pee and fish sperm. Because it is, you know. I bet that makes things like plankton and algae pretty happy, though. I’ve said ‘plankton’ to myself about 10 times now, and it’s really making me laugh. Go ahead, say it: plankton. Not as cool as puffins, but still. Speaking of which, as of next Wednesday I’ll be a certified puffinologist, and probably the world’s leading authority on puffins. But i’m jumping ahead of myself here. After the museum, we picked Chris up and went to Gameworks for an evening of zombie-shooting, DDR, nachos, and that skateboard game. In an ideal world, all of these things would be integrated into one activity, but for now it’s good enough they’re all in one building together. This weekend, I had provided myself with a to-do list about 90 feet long, and I accomplished it all. I went to work for a couple hours Saturday morning, cleaned, bought coffee beans, did laundry, got a headlamp, cleaned my car, made dark-chocolate-cherry scones, grocery shopped, closed credit accounts, found a knitting project for the flight, wrote the new fundraiser website, did sudoku in the bath, arranged for new car and renters’ insurance (for half what I’m currently paying), figured out what to wear snorkeling (I got camo board shorts, because I rule), shopped at Target, went to the mall with my sister and bought an outfit for Sean’s fancy cocktail party next weekend, got my PO box, dyed my hair purple (sorta), and signed up for an orientation with Habitat for Humanity. I love Jimmy Carter, dudes. Also I managed to go skating at the Depot with Tom and Jason, dined at Herkimer (which is always dark and cold), and saw Tristan and Isolde. Eh. I had trouble not giggling at Tristan because he reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite. I cried, but only because I always cry at movies. OH! I’m super-excited about Marie-Antoinette, which I wouldn’t care about in the slightest except it’s made by Sofia Coppola. Lost in Translation continues to make me happy on a regular basis. …And I think I’ll just continue this semisensical ramble and mention I’ve watched Baraka once-and-a-half lately, and it makes me want to die with love for the traveling. Sigh. Since I cannot leave you photoless yet again, here are a few: gold medallazy animal
purple hair, featuring ROBOTS.
And as always, there are more on Flickr. OK, so my final piece of excitement today is our next fundraiser! As I’ve mentioned, we’re making truffles for Valentine’s Day. Chris has been inventing and refining, and the truffles are excellent. We’re making them with dark chocolate, and with little pink ribbons on top. So, hey, why don’t you: Check out the flyer! (thanks to Kaye for her design work)
AND THEN!
Place your order here! I put this up on the interweb a few hours ago and we already have a couple hundred dollars in orders. Feel free to distribute amongst friends and coworkers, of course. Boobs everywhere thank you! Lastly, I will answer one of the many many questions I got for delurking week. Of course, you may delurk at any time. I’m not one to stand on ceremony here. Bye for now!

q:explain the “foods i can eat” thing. a: This is a topic that has confused and irritated many. Mainly, I’m vegetarian, I don’t eat sugar, and I try to eat in a generally healthy manner (most people know it as the ‘whole foods’ diet, but I base my nutrition on the idea that stable blood sugar is the healthiest way to go). I had a lot of issues a year or two ago when I made my diet so extreme that I cut out practically all carbohydrates, because of the effect they had on my blood sugar. I was unable to tolerate things like rice, pasta, potatoes, or bread. I’ve slowly reintroduced those foods, and now just eat them in small quantities, otherwise they make me sleepy. I primarily stick to fruits and vegetables, fake meat (especially the gluten-based kind, since I’m not a huge fan of tofu), and whole grains. After eating that way for a long time, your body gets kind of crabby about junk food. It’s easiest to avoid it. On a related nutrition-geeky note, I’ve seen some news recently about the fact that they’re finding that high-fat diets have a similar effect on diabetics (I’m hypoglycemic, the opposite of diabetic) that sugar does. I’ve known this through experience: greasy foods have always had the same effect on me as sugar, and I’m not sure why. I’m very interested to learn the physiological reasons behind this. |
