The fall of travel has begun! We spent last weekend in LA (well, mostly in Orange County, because that’s just how we roll), and are leaving for Philadelphia (with a side trip to Atlantic City) on Friday.

I’ve been slowly working through my photos, a task which is threatening to become overwhelming with successive trips. There are a lot of photos of boats, planes, and the ocean, as you might expect.

I’m about halfway done with Key West and Miami pictures, though, so you literary nerds can go check out the Hemingway house. There are also pictures of our ride on the Western Union schooner (fun fact: it was still laying cable til the 1970s!).

We got into LA pretty late on Friday night, and drove right to Costa Mesa where we had dinner at Taco Asylum around 9pm. I will be fantasizing about their paneer tacos for all of eternity. Saturday, I dropped Matt off at his conference and went to visit one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever been: Mission San Juan Capistrano. I’ve visited three times now, and I’ll keep going back whenever I can.

I then drove up the PCH, stopping to see things like Laguna Beach:

I met April and Jonathan for brunch in Costa Mesa, then continued my wandering til it was time to get Matt. (I went to Anaheim to see the Angels’ stadium and Honda Center, where the Ducks play. Those arenas in the middle of nowhere MAKE NO SENSE.) We had drinks at Don the Beachcomber, then went to our hotel in Seal Beach. From there, we walked to 320 Main (one of the recommended classic cocktail bars), where we had excellent food and drinks. Around 10pm, we walked down to the beach and noticed that the surf was glowing neon blue. We thought it was some weird trick of light, and after some time realized it had to be bioluminescence. Turns out we were witnessing red tide! I tried to take video, but it was too dark to turn out. Still: amazing.

Sunday, we went up to Santa Monica to finally have brunch at Real Food Daily, then wandered around town for a while. Since flights can NEVER EVER leave LAX on time, we had plenty of opportunity to hang out on the pier and then go have beer and people-watch. We got on the plane about half an hour late, then sat there for another half-hour or so while they 1) changed the tire and 2) put gas in it. The pilot was clearly very angry with the ground crew, so that was awkward.

On the way home, we got to watch the Lynx game on seatback TV. Nice to see Minnesota with a playoff-caliber team for once!

This week has been gloriously quiet, so we’ve been able to cook at home (and grill, since it’s summer again), clean up the yard for winter, put all the wedding stuff away and prepare the basement for our Halloween party, and generally catch up on things. This married life… I’m a fan.
