The 2011 Bermuda Cup Match began this morning! It’s a huge annual cricket match between the parishes of Somerset and St George’s. I originally became familiar with it while researching times to visit; the two-day event is a national holiday, so everything shuts down and people party. Which is really appealing, obviously, but we wanted to be able to do some shopping and such while we were there.
We heard about it from everyone in Bermuda. The newspaper had dramatic articles about it daily. All the stores were offering Cup Match specials. Everybody told us to make sure to schedule our next trip during the event, so we could see how awesome it is. And we want to, because we got completely caught up in the excitement while we were there. So much so that we decided to bet on it: Matt picked Somerset (because he purchased a Cup Match tshirt that he realized afterward was supporting Somerset), and I got St George’s. Which is fine, because we had a great time there (at some point I’ll tell you all about the kissing English tailor, Ian, and the crusty French bartender named Geezer).
This bet tied in well to another discovery we made in Bermuda: Scrumpy Jack.
We purchased it at first because we couldn’t stop giggling over the name. When we saw the line about visiting Scrumpyshire on the can (while drinking it in the pool), we laughed even harder. It quickly became our new favorite beverage, so much so that we brought a four-pack of it home.
The loser of our bet has to purchase the other a shot of Jameson to pour in their Scrumpy Jack, thereby making a Johnny Scrump-Up.
GO ST GEORGE’S!!
