I had to brush up quick on my 404 facts because it’s been so very long; I worried that my knowledge had become outdated.

After about 2.5 seconds of intense preparation, I came to the conclusion that not much has changed. There are two things of note, and they both revolve around Google:

– Since Google 0wnz0rs the search engine market, they have the ability to make a huge impact on this issue. I don’t know that they have, but they could, if they were so inclined.

– The ‘cached page’ feature is the best Google invention ever.

So that’s your 404 news for today.

The thing I was reminded of with radio interviews is that their hold music is the broadcast itself. So when you’re sitting there waiting to go on, you’re listening to them talking about you. Mispronouncing your name and such. And then all of a sudden you’re tossed into it. It’s bizarre.

Yesterday, my financial advisor (me) decided I should postpone woodshop another quarter and instead contribute the several hundred dollars I’d spend on lumber for my bed to my future financial security. I figured out that if I contribute the maximum to the new IRA that used to be my 401(k) by the end of the year, it’ll be almost as if I never stopped adding to it when I got laid off 18 months ago. And here I was thinking I was badly screwing up my retirement income. That rules.

Also, browsing through prospectuses (prospecti?) turns me on.

What else? Oh yeah. Here’s my newest dumb trick. Type ‘wordy’ in that box over on the left and hit enter. Awwyeah. OK, I know I’m the only one who digs that stuff. Shut up.

This is my new favorite work scenario, which has happened way too often lately:

I ask the db admin for minor changes. I could easily make them myself, but I respect his role.

He gets pissed at the project manager for requesting changes when she doesn’t understand the system-wide implications*.

He tells me he should quit because he’s no longer the right guy for the job.

I’m left unable to fix the problem. Perhaps I should write in my bug report: will be corrected when you get the right guy for the job.

This is why I tend to be a lone gun. Maybe only 50% greater efficiency than a team, but 100% fewer interpersonal politics.

Oh, he just apologized. Huh.

Whatever.
Jenni

* If I had a dollar for every time I heard the phrase ‘system-wide implications’, I wouldn’t be waiting to buy my truck.

Hola.
